Investing in Yourself is like Investing in College, But Less Understood

R. Shawn McBride recently spoke about investing in yourself to build your brand.

Hey folks, Shawn here with you today, talking about an important concept. Building your brand is like paying to go to college. And the mainstream world gets it, right? We largely embrace college. We hear politicians talking about it. People say, “Oh, college is your best investment.” Everybody wants their child to go to college. Building your brand is very similar, but much less understood. When you’re building your brand, you are putting money into a fund of value for later.

College, what do you get? You get experience. You get some knowledge. You build a network and you position yourself for success. And you certainly get that piece of paper stamped, like those behind me, showing that you’ve done something great and that people should trust you or they should believe in this knowledge information you have. College does that for you.

What does your brand do? Largely the same thing. You don’t get a stamped piece of paper, it’s not formal, but over time people start to understand what you can do, what your capabilities are, what value you are adding to the world, and everything starts to change. So, I want you thinking about that, you know.

I was talking to a business owner recently. They were struggling, they were building a brand, they were doing a great job of it, but they were really, really worried about that. And I told them, it’s like going to college. You’re building it. Now right when you come out of college, you don’t necessarily get that top paying job. You have to then build more skills on top of what you’ve built, and brand building is the same way. You’ve got to keep going. Like Gary Vaynerchuk says, “It’s like building bricks.” You keep laying bricks, laying bricks, laying bricks until you get to something big. Building your brand is like investing in going to college. You are putting money into an asset, an intangible asset that will pay later. So keep doing it.

Do not hesitate and understand that those of us that get it, get it. Those that don’t, don’t. And you don’t have to answer to the whole world. You have to answer to yourself, your marketplace. The economics will drive it. You can see others have done it. You can do it, too. Building your brand is just like investing in going to college. Take some perspective. Don’t be scared.
