Being Respectful While Being Disrespected

In the business world, things are going to happen and sometimes somebody’s not going to treat you with the respect you deserve. You’re going to plan your business world around certain things and people aren’t going to do what they need to do. They’re going to make promises they don’t follow through with. They’re not going to treat you the way you thought they would.

When events like this happen you really have two choices. You can go to war, or you can move on. My philosophy in these circumstances is simple: I’m moving on. I use the fact that the person didn’t do what they said they were going to do as a learning lesson.

The fact that they didn’t follow through teaches me that they’re the type of person who doesn’t follow through and it’s a great reason to lessen your business relationship with that person going forward. Trim the relationship to the bare minimum.

You can then move forward and build stronger relationships, real relationships, with others. You have learned where to allocate your time.

I think, if you’re being disrespected by somebody in business, it’s unfortunate. We should all treat each other with respect. We should all do the things we say we will do – especially when other people build plans and base responsibilities and future projects based on what you said you were going to do. However, not everybody lives this way, and you’re going to learn this as you go through your journey, and that’s okay.

As you learn you figure out who your real partners are and who your real allies are. Give them a chance to fail (http://www.mcbrideattorneys.com/what-should-i-do…-with-my-partner/). If they fail, that’s okay. You’re moving on to bigger and better things.
