Creating a Culture of Doing Business Effectively(™):  Including the Right People

Posted on: July 21st, 2018 by R. Shawn McBride No Comments

***This post is part of a series of on how to Do Business Effectively(™).  R. Shawn McBride helps business Do Business Effectively(™).***

Part of Doing Business Effectively(™) is including the right people in your organizations.

We recommend two main (interrelated) strategies to make sure you have the right people with your organization: selective hiring and use of the Promotability Process(™) in the DBE Pyramid.

First to be effective we need a good hiring process that brings in the right people into your organization. The key here is to know who you want, what skills you need and screening for the right people.

The second piece is the one we want to focus on in this article.

If you review the Do Business Effectively(™) Pyramid you’ll notice that the Promotability Process(™) comes early in the training under the pyramid (you work from the bottom to the top):

Promotability Process(™) is critical to making sure you have the right people. The Promotability Process(™) is partially about showing employees how they can advance in your organization. More importantly the Promotability Process(™) sets expectations of your staff. We recommend that your evaluations mirror what the outcomes you want from your team in the performance of their jobs.

And in designing the DBE Pyramid we put the Promotability Process(™) as early in the training as possible. We would not recommend it before It’s About Time or Do Business Differently(™) because the staff member needs to know their goals and what’s unique about them before they can determine if they are a fit to be promoted in the organization.

But as soon as possible strong expectations – and goals – are communicated to the staff member. Then regular evaluations can start to see if the staff member is progressing in the organization.

Additionally the clear expectations may cause staff members that don’t fit to select themselves out of the organization. And that’s a win too.

This is amazingly simple, yet powerful, like the entire Do Business Effectively(™) Pyramid.

If you think your organization might benefit from Do Business Effectively(™) give us a call at McBride For Business, LLC and we can discuss your needs – 214-418-0258.

Lessons Of Change: How Can We Be Better At It?

Posted on: July 19th, 2018 by R. Shawn McBride No Comments

Change is part of our world. And change typically comes in two big ways: external forced change or internally driven change (which, ironically, is often driven by external change).

Change is predicted to become a bigger part of our lives soon.

Many people feel the pace of change in the world has increased in our lifetimes. Electrification and the car also brought radical change. The lives people were living 100 years ago are very different from our lives today. We can’t predict if lives 100 years hence from now will have change or less than the prior 100 year period – but it doesn’t really matter.

Change is here. And coming from an external source right now and in a big way! Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence are both promising sweeping change to business and society.

I, in fact, stopped to write on the two technologies intensely this month and it left me with an 8 day gap in blogs.

That change – of writing more (for books) – meant I changed other areas of my life (writing less blogs). So it raises the question of how do we get better at change?

One thing I realize from the last week is that change is interconnected. One change “here” often means some other change “there.” This is part of why Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence are so intriguing – they promise to change our entire worlds but changing one thing that has ripple effects.

We’ll be better at change if we manage the ripples and anticipate them. That’s part of why I am working so hard with Dali Kranzthor to bring you meaningful books about this upcoming change. I want you riding the waves – not drowning in the current.

If you’ve been working on Blockchain or AI – or know someone great that has – reach out to me or Dali on LinkedIn.

And if you want to change your time management grab a copy of It’s About Time.

Creating a Culture of Doing Business Effectively(™):  Thinking Different

Posted on: July 11th, 2018 by R. Shawn McBride No Comments

***This post is part of a series of on how to Do Business Effectively(™).  R. Shawn McBride helps business Do Business Effectively(™).***

I had a long discussion today with one of my business partners about thinking different in business and the push and pull between standards (for an organization) and uniqueness (for individuals).

But one thing is for certain. If you want to Do Business Effectively(™) you have to allow space for different thinking. Too much routine means you are relying on the creativity (or lack of it) from those that set-up your procedures.

And group think – and thinking the same is only going to get you so far. What you really need is an organization that thinks differently and embraces its uniqueness.

So the challenge to you – for all of us – is how to we build organizations that allow creativity and innovation but still have a strong brand and process flow.

There will be more to say on this. Stay tuned to this blog.

And if you want something more immediate call us at McBride For Business to schedule a consulting session.

Why Your Big Goal Shouldn’t Be Your Focus

Posted on: July 9th, 2018 by R. Shawn McBride No Comments

I am all about goals. And I think you should spend time to think about your big goals – like what will your life look like in 10 years – or 15 years.

So it might come as a big surprise to you that I will tell you that your big goal shouldn’t be your focus.

It should be the center of your planning and it should be where you are headed but it shouldn’t be your focus.

Say what?

Is this confusing?  Maybe so.

Let me break it down just a little. Many times goals are big/fundamental. And if you look at your actions today in light of your goals there may be little correlation. The two are simply too far apart.

For some focusing on the goal might cause them to think they’ll never get there!

So what do you focus on?

If you aren’t focused on your big goal, what do you focus on?  Focus on doing the daily and weekly activities that will get you there.

For instance I focus on writing 3,000 words a day. 3,000 words for blogs, books or articles. Writing 3,000 words a day gets me to my goal. When I do that I create more, I get more followers, I enhance my message – and I move to my goals.

What can you do to break your goals down? What will you focus on today?

Need a speaker at your next conference?  Need some coverage of planning and goals? Reach out and let’s chat.

The Rise of Artificial Intelligence

Posted on: July 8th, 2018 by R. Shawn McBride No Comments

There is no arguing that computers are making amazing advances. A few weeks ago Google unveiled Google Duplex that used a computer to call and make a hair appointment followed by an attempt to make a reservation at a restaurant. Attendees at the live event gasped and clapped at the technology.

How nice to have a computer call and make appointments for you!  More free time! Yes.

But then another article came out. It suggests Google Duplex can be used to replace humans in call centers.  Maybe too much free time?

Or the ultimate in weirdness – computers calling computers and talking to make appointments?

There is no doubt technology is changing and it’s going to impact business and our workforce.

Whether it’s Google Duplex or something else we need to be watching.

And if you are concerned about the future of business sign up for my mailing list. And if you have friends that are concerned about the future of business forward them this and tell them to sign-up. I’ll be working with Dali Kranzthor and bringing you more coverage of this issue – including a book on Artificial Intelligence scheduled to come out later in 2018.

It’s go time.

And if you are seeing an issue with artificial intelligence drop me a note and let me know so we can address it in the future.

The Struggle of New Skills

Posted on: July 7th, 2018 by R. Shawn McBride No Comments

If we are truly growing and learning we are developing new skills.  But developing new skills can be hard. Very hard.

Secretly I think this is why most people don’t succeed.

Because it’s easy to stay in your current habits and patterns. It’s hard to look at what needs to change and make a change.

Charles Duhigg’s book The Power of Habit does an amazing job of examining habits and how to change them – and why they mean so much in business.

This week is a tale of both worlds for me.

I am back into book writing and my business partner Dali Kranzthor and I made amazing progress on our soon to be released book What Your Business Needs to Know NOW About Blockchain.

And getting into the habit of writing more – and keeping old habits – each day is hard.

The new goal is to write 3,000 words a day among my various books, articles and projects. This means I need to improve as a writer and increase my pace while keeping up quality.

Readers of this blog/email series may have seen the first effects. Between the July 4th holiday and the work on the book I fell out of the habit of getting my work done to blog every day right here.

The key lesson

The key lesson is just what Charles Duhigg tells us in The Power of Habit.  Not every attempt to change a habit is going to work. But if we test and experiment we might find a way that works for us.

What are you doing to change your habits?  What is working for you?

And if you need a coach to help you get you to the next level – that’s where McBride For Business can help.

Building Online Training:  Offering the Beta

Posted on: July 3rd, 2018 by R. Shawn McBride No Comments

One of the hardest things in business is getting from the theoretical to the applied. Getting from talking in a room and thinking about what customers might want to actually helping customers.

And this can be a real challenge for online training.

So how do you bridge the gap?

Enter the Beta

Beta testing is key – get some customers to try the early version on for size.

And in turn for feedback the customer enjoys a discount and more hands-on service.

It can be a real win-win.

In his book, The Lean Start-up, Eric Reis suggests just this strategy with taking new products to market.

Real Life Study

In real life we at McBride For Business use this strategy too.

We recently released a new version of our Do Business Effectively(™) training which is online based. Users can have their teams log-in remotely and use our knowledge and skill.

One lucky customer got to buy in at a steep discount and is giving us feedback for our next round of user.  It’s a true win-win.

(If you think you want to get in on the beta of this we will accept 2 more discounted customers for online training of Do Business Effectively(™)).

This way we are not spending all of our time guessing what real customers might want. We see what actual paying customers need and want.

Talk about speeding up the learning process!

Do you need help setting up your beta?  Call us at McBride For Business and we can help you.

Separating From Work

Posted on: July 2nd, 2018 by R. Shawn McBride No Comments

It’s been another Sunday.

It’s funny how many of my business friends that are making it to the next level are giving up working on Sunday. Some are even turning off their phone for the day.

I am not so mechanical on my days off but I think they are needed.  This Saturday and Sunday for me has been about TEDx applications (I want to do another TEDx to follow-up on my first one), errands, book writing and preparing a few new offerings for the market.

Sometimes I change the pace on a weekday – it doesn’t have to be Sunday – but the key is to break the routine. It doesn’t always have to be Sunday. But it has to be something.

Are you giving yourself the space to be creative? Do you have the space to get in touch with your dreams?

Let me know what you do to make the space.
