The Six Group

People love success. I love working with successful people.

Success begets success.

So how do I work with other successful people in a way that brings more success?

Enter The Six Group

The Six Group is a concept by Dawnna St. Louis.

Essentially we have a group of up to six people and we focus on six key activities every day.  And we track them.

And then in a weekly one hour meeting we are accountable to our fellow members for how we did on the six key activities.

But Wait, There’s More

Not only are we reporting numbers but we are also testing our positioning statement, helping each other with challenges and finding new ways to grow our businesses.

Because of the weekly interaction we have a certain knowledge and understanding of each other and our businesses.

My Six Group currently consists of:  Jessica Rector, Silvana Capaldi, Rome Madison and Frances Rios — all of who are doing amazing things in speaking and the world. And that’s 5 – not six. We are still open for the six person to come to us.

It’s the most powerful mastermind I’ve been in.

The key is that we listen and learn from each other – and know each other.

How to Create Content From Work You Are Already Doing

What you are watching (How I am building content).

Many of you have been reading my blog or getting my business planning tips for some time.

Let me pull back the curtain and show you what I’ve been doing lately and what will continue.

Maybe you’ll find this interesting or maybe, just maybe, it’ll help you.

As you know I spend a lot of my time speaking. And speaking is a business of its own – getting leads, negotiating speaking fees, meeting potential clients, etc. You get the idea from running your business. Speaking really isn’t that different.

And I also have this email list and blog where I share some knowledge to build content and relationships.

So for the speaking side of my house I am still working on more efficient ways to get engagements. It was suggested I build an articles bank where I have articles that the organizations that may hire me as a speaker would use for their publications to their members.  So the article bank was born.

This allows organizations to use my articles for their needs (you’ll notice almost all my articles have a permission to reprint right with them) and allows me to add value in advance.

I am also still writing for you, the reader, as I always have.  I have just been picking topics that also allow me to fill the articles bank.

How is that for killing two birds with one stone?

Building a Complete Training Framework:  How Structure Creates Certainty

One of the biggest issues with training and one of the biggest complaints we often hear is a lack of certainty. Quite simply people want to know where their training is going – and if you don’t tell them they get worried.

Many people are concerned, or outright complain, that many companies do training in a haphazard fashion. Much akin to a game of whack-a-mole.

I can imagine employees at your company sitting in the break room saying “I wonder what problem will happen and which band-aid training will they put us through next?”

It’s a prescription for uncertainty and problems.

Changing It Up

When training is part of a broader plan things change.  And that’s where the Do Business Effectively(™) Pyramid comes in.

Training is more effective when the learners know where things are headed. How the pieces fit together.  Why learning “this” is important to getting “that result”.

For instance, when we design a Do Business Effectively(™) training for Time Magicment(™) we make sure that the learners know how managing their time better is going to relate to their job – but also to their life and career goals.

Sometimes potential clients – mistakenly thinking they are adding efficiency – ask us to not spend all that time on “goals”.  But we find it’s that connection of the work now to the future that creates the real incentive and drive for the learns to start implementing and working on change right away.

It gives a “why” to the hard work associated with training beyond “your boss said so”.

And It Goes On

Based on our Do Business Effectively(™) Pyramid we always recommend starting training with Time Magicment(™)/It’s About Time as the start of training (Time Magicment(™) being our signature system and It’s About Time being the corresponding book) or Do Business Differently(™) (another program on being unique and different in business). This sets a foundation.

Early in the training the learners are introduced to the pyramid and see the progression of how the learning today will lead to the learning of tomorrow. They also get to see how their work of today leads to their life of tomorrow.

Time Magicment(™) training becomes about more than just speeding up what they are doing (which is where most systems fall flat) but it becomes about them! And so on for each step of the ladder.

People are more interested when things are about them.

Certainty is the Key

When the learners know how the pieces fit together, have a map of where they are headed, and feel directed they tend to relax. They know that they are part of a bigger system and a bigger plan that embraces them. And when they feel relaxed and secure they learn even faster.

Training Your Team (Correctly) Is Hard Work

Training takes time and money. And it takes time from your core activities. Many times we hear teams that are getting serious about training for the first time (or are recommitting) worried about how much time and money it will take to get to results.

And they are right — it will take time and money. Anyone that promises you results with putting in time and money is just taking your money and is going to leave you with results you don’t love.

To retrain adults in a long-term fashion is going to take serious work. You need to update thinking and rewire bad habits.

Sure you can learn some tidbits in a quick fashion that can make a serious impact, and that’s what I do when I keynote or do short sessions with clients, but those don’t have the same long-term habit changing impact as ongoing training.

You’ve Got To Get It Right

With all of this time and money going into training (assuming you are willing to make a commitment) you want to get a return on your investment (ROI). Any business does. And it wouldn’t make sense to invest if you don’t get back more than you put in.

And the best way to ensure a positive ROI is to make sure you are doing things effectively and that’s where the Do Business Effectively(™) Pyramid comes in.

Many companies attempt to put training in the right order or just work on the issue of the day.  But often deeper content issues from other areas of prior training or learning start becoming weak spots requiring more retraining as the training progresses. If only we had worked on those issues before they became issues in later training….

But the Do Business Effectively(™) Pyramid is like efficiency in a box (well, pyramid).

When you follow the order of the pyramid your training will build on each other progressing the organization to this goals and bringing each employee up to their potential to be a leader.

The world keeps getting more and more complex which is why effective learning needs to be simple. Our brains are changing (there is lots of scientific work on how the changing world is changing our brains) and the Do Business Effectively(™) Pyramid recognizes that.

Complex thoughts and ideas take a long time to instill and the pyramid balances immediate results and long-term impact.

The pyramid is made to be simple and clear and each person in the training can know exactly where they are going as their career and training progresses. There is no mystery and the interconnection is clear – this lowers confusion and helps create motivation and buy-in.

How Can The Word “Why” Reduce Burnout?

“Why” is an interesting word.

Bill walks into Mike’s office and Mike asks a simple question, “why didn’t the order get to the customer on time?”

What’s happening now?  From an emotional perspective.

Bill is on the defensive, emotional and upset. Mike is in a control position maybe even feeling a little guilty for having to ask the question.

Bill is stressed because of this and he is going to respond emotionally.

Why Does “Why” Invoke So Much Emotion?

Why is a loaded word. Built into it is responsibility, accountability and the requirement for an explanation.

It’s like a word with built in emotional responses – in this case a negative one.

The Other Side of Why

While “why” can be negative it can also be positive.

“Why” can be your reason for being. Your motivation. Your purpose.

All in one little word.

Ask someone “why” they live where they live or “why” they chose their career and they usually light up.

But asking “why” you show you care about something deep inside them. You also let them connect with something in their core.

Why can be powerfully good.

Same powerful word – two completely different responses.

How Do We Use This Power

Clearly our companies and our teams can benefit from a good “why” and we want to avoid a negative why.

“Why” for the future is aspirational and generally positive.  “Why” of the past is usually bad.

We want to stay on the good side of things!

There should usually be at least two “whys” going on in any organization at all times:  the “why” of the organization and the “why” of the team member.

The “why” of the organization should spark positive emotion and good decisions. They “why” of the team member should motivate them to give their all.

When “why” is used this way it can fuel growth and motivation.

Rewinding Mike and Bill

Now that we know how to use “why” for the positive and not the negative let’s replay Mike and Bill meeting.

Bill walks into Mike’s office and Mike asks a simple question, “how can we improve our processes so that we are on time every time?”

Bill relaxes and they have an open conversation and get to work.

The “why” of the organization is supported by not asking “why” in an emotionally charged situation.

Let’s Reduce Burnout

So if we want to help our people and not cause so much organizational tension the key is to use “why” in an uplifting way not as a stressor.

Fixing Burnout By Building a New Muscle

When we work with professionals that are “burned out” or with leaders with teammates that are “burned out” one of the common issues that comes up is the ability to say “no”.

And it most cases it’s no one’s fault. In fact, in many cases, the world has wired the professional to fail.

What It Looks Like

Sally returned to her desk from the industry conference last week. She has a ton of notes and a small pile of business cards.  She’d really like to start implementing, today, the great strategies she learn. But she still had a big project to complete from before the conference with at least 2 full days or work to go.

AND she already has 10 voicemails to return (and they say folks don’t use the phone any more) and 250 emails she couldn’t read while at the conference. AND paper mail showed up will she was gone.

As soon as she walks into her office she is overwhelmed. AND she has a meeting with her boss in an hour.

At the meeting her boss gives her the assignment that was held for her return.  From the boss’ perspective the 3 days Sally was at the conference are already lost.

Sally just wants to crawl into bed or give up.

She’s burned out.

And it’s not uncommon. She feels like a lot of professionals today.

Wired to Fail

The way to get ahead in school and early in most careers to do everything.  Say “yes.” It’s essentially a pie-eating contest of work and activities.

And to make it through the early stages of your academic work and career pie eating works just fine.

But at some point there is too much pie. Too much work. Too much activity. You can’t eat all the pie.

The answer for most professionals in this case is to try to work more hours, sleep less and generally be “productive.”

And that works – for a while.

But at some point there is just too much pie and the pie eating skills that got you so far fail.

And this normally brings feelings of overwhelm – and “burnout.”

Time for New Thinking

What happens next is critical and defines those that have amazing careers and those that are average.

Here at McBride For Business we don’t like average!

At some point you have to start picking what you will do and what you won’t do. This requires active management and saying “no” a lot more often.

Actually being intentional in what you do and what pie you eat.

But Saying “No” Isn’t Easy

The next challenge the comes up is that saying “no” isn’t easy.

If you are the one feeling burned out you probably try very hard to make everyone happy. Saying “no” feels like a let-down to them.

If you are the leader know that your teammate likely wants to please you and make you happy but they don’t know how.

Simply many of us have not be taught to say “no”.

For leaders you need to enable your team to say “no” by helping them have clear priorities and helping them figure out what to focus on first. This will lower their stress, make them feel more in control and generally lead to better work product.

If you are the one overwhelmed it’s time to look at your total life and priorities. What’s important and what’s not. What can you get rid of?

Getting Clarity

As you build your “no muscle” and say “no” more and more often it will get easier. And you’ll feel more in control and intentional.

It’s amazing to watch our clients as they start to say “no” more often.  Smiles come back, they feel in control and they feel like the decision makers they are meant to be.

But the key to being able to say “no” is to know what the priorities are in your business and your life so you can put things in the right order.

When we work with our clients we start with priorities and goals before time management or anything else.

Back to Sally

As Sally is sitting in her boss’ office she wishes should could push back by one week the project she had been working on prior to her departure for the conference. Everyone knows it doesn’t need to be done until next month. But she is afraid to say “no” so she has to figure out, in her head while her boss is talking, which nights this week she’ll skip sleeping.

What if the culture of the company allowed Sally to say “no” comfortably?  Wouldn’t the company get a better result? Wouldn’t Sally be happier?

Sounds like a win-win.

More “no’s” often lead to happier organizations and doing more of what matters.

Are you allowing your team members to dream?

Addressing Burnout: Making Dreams OK

One recurring issue we see when working with clients on burnout is that a lot of times the person with burnout feels stuck (we notice this whether we are working directly with the person with burnout or the team leader that sees this in their team).

And many times the person feels stuck because their current position isn’t matching with their long-term goals.

But that is OK.  Most of us want to grow and do more in time.

What’s surprising, however, is what happens when we make dreams OK.  Make dreams OK to think about and OK to express in the work environment and amazing things happen.

One time Shannon J. Gregg and I were facilitating a group on Time Magicment(™). We asked a corporate team about their individual dreams. One of the team members raised their hand and sheepishly volunteered they wanted to grow to be a manager.  This particular team member was very concerned to admit this because they were afraid their current manager would be mad.

What followed was a very interesting discussion with the manager and the team member. This manager (like most managers in our experience) was thrilled, not upset!

The team member has made a common assumption that their boss would be mad that the team member wanted the bosses job.

However, from the bosses standpoint they were thrilled to have a team member that wanted to learn more, do more and advance. Talk about someone useful on the team!

You see teammates that want to do more and be more generally work very hard, become better problem solvers and do great work.  Sure they may leave at some point if they can’t advance in the organization but the work until then is powerful and valuable for the company and the team member.  And may times things change to open up an advancement opportunity.

Are you missing out?

Many companies are missing out completely!  The team members won’t express themselves and try to protect their current role by not trying to show they want to advance. The team member gets frustrated for having to “throttle back” and management gets upset they aren’t living to their potential.

It’s a lose-lose.

But when the team member knows it is safe to dream and the company supports their dreams they often excel and work hard (and smart) to get to their goals.

That’s a win-win.

How does a new product evolve? Does this give you some ideas?

How does a new product come into being?

Well it depends.

But let me tell you about the evolution of one of my products because I suspect it might spur some ideas for you in your business.

For a long time I’ve known my expertise is to help folks to Do Business Effectively(™).  But as you know, different clients come in different styles with different needs.

So how do you run a business in a world where so many of your clients are different?

For me and Shannon J. Gregg we have decided to focus on our expertise and then find the most efficient way to get that expertise to each client.

So that means the same core materials that work so well at conferences, in one-on-one coaching and for in-person corporate training can also add value to others in different ways.

So when a new prospective corporate client wanted to use our Time Magicment(™) training but couldn’t come to pay for us to appear in person we rolled out something we had been planning for a while – our Time Magicment(™) training by video.

It’s a great win-win.  We take the same core materials we have developed and we help clients in new ways.  This first client gets the benefit of being in our beta group which means a lower price and more hands-on for them. And soon it is anticipated that other companies will use the video training (which comes complete with facilitation notes for using the course in a team environment) and getting access to a different form of training there.

Do you see what Shannon and I did there?  We offer essentially the same product in a new way that different customers want.

Everyone is better off now.

Business Lessons from Space Shuttle Launches

The Space Shuttle Lifting Off

**NOTE:  This is a weekend edition with a lighter tone.**

Ever watch a space shuttle launch?

One of my favorite memories was watching a night launch of a space shuttle in the Florida.

And from that (what used to be) very common event I see a very important business lesson.

One things I always noticed, and I particularly noticed in person, was how slow the space shuttle starts its journey.

According to this NASA article the shuttle velocity starts at only 2.45 meters per second and speeds up to around 29 meters per second at the shuttle is approaching space.

That’s a lot of growth.  A lot of increase.

But the space shuttle can’t start its velocity at the 29 meters per second for a variety of reasons.  It has to grow.

But the initial seconds at 2.45 meters per second are just as important to the journey as the later stages.

It’s the foundation.

We need to keep this in mind as we are growing our businesses or new lines of business. They are going to take time to grow…to speed up…to do the great things.

The slower stages will lay the foundation for the faster parts of your journey.

Just a reminder that things start slow but can do great things from that foundation.

Keep going.  Be patient.

Addressing Burnout:  Clarity of Career Path

***NOTE:  This is a series of articles on the critically important subject of burnout. We offer programs on burnout.***

Not everyone has a map.  That’s just the reality.

In fact when I work with many business owners I find out that they jumped into business because they saw a market opportunity or they started a company based on their past skills.

We see the same in careers of the teammates when we work with our corporate clients.

Many employees “accidentally” ended up where they are now.  Often this was from listening to others on what they should do or just taking the next opportunity that was a “step up.”

And the end result of this is often having a team member in the place where they don’t really want to be causing the whole organization to suffer.

And more importantly they normally don’t see the path forward and feel stuck. When you randomly got where you are, and you don’t like your day-to-day job functions, it is often hard to see how you will get to the next step. And you certainly don’t believe that the random walk that has gotten you to an unhappy place will somehow, magically, get you to a happy place.

Enter the feelings burnout many are feeling.

Time For A Change

Taking control of your career path, or having those that report to you start this journey, can make a tremendous difference in dealing with burnout.

Think about it.  Have you ever gone for a hike or a walk to an interesting place? Following that trail knowing that you are working your way to something interesting motivates you. Compare that to the times when you are just wondering and not knowing where you are headed.  There’s a whole different pace in your step, different thinking and a different feel.

We can bring that same lessons to careers.

If you, or your team, are feeling burned out it may be time to reconnect your work today to your business and professional goals.  You “why”.

When we teach Time Magicment(™) we usually start by connecting what team members are currently doing to their life goals. And then we create steps.

For the team members that get it it is amazing to watch. Light bulbs go off in their heads that if they complete these doable next steps they’ll be launching themselves to their big goals. They see the path to accomplishment.

And that – that knowing that you are working on something big and getting there – that increases engagement and motivation and lowers burnout.

So, if you are seeing burnout in your organization it may be time to reset goals.  Look at long term visions and get your teammates thinking about how their actions now are going to help them to get where they want to go in life. It can be as simple as a few training sessions on goals and connecting those goals to concrete steps (we’ve seen it work time and time again).
